You've prepared your CV — great. But typing "CV attached" and hitting send throws away your first impression. Recruiters read the application email too, and a well-written, short email makes you stand out. Here's a job application email guide with copy-and-use examples.
The 4 Parts of a Good Application Email
- Subject line — the role plus your name
- Greeting — to a named person where possible
- Body — who you are and why you're a fit (2-3 sentences)
- Closing — thanks, contact details and a note about the attachment
Subject Line Examples
The subject line decides whether your email gets opened:
- ✅ "Senior Software Developer Application – James Carter"
- ✅ "Digital Marketing Specialist Application – Sophie Clarke"
- ❌ "Hello" / "Job" / a blank subject line
Example 1: Standard Job Application Email
Subject: Accountant Application – Emma Wilson Dear Hiring Team, I'd like to apply for the Accountant position you posted on LinkedIn. I have five years' experience in accounts and reporting within the manufacturing sector, with strong ERP and accounting-software skills. You'll find my full CV attached. I'd welcome the opportunity to discuss my application further. Kind regards, Emma Wilson +44 7700 000000 | [email protected]
Example 2: Application via a Referral
Subject: Sales Representative Application – Daniel Brooks Hi Sarah, Tom Bennett on your team mentioned the open Sales Representative role and suggested my profile might be a good fit. You can see my three years of field sales experience and my track record in account management in the attached CV. I'd be glad to speak whenever suits you. Thanks, Daniel Brooks
Example 3: Recent Graduate / No Experience
Subject: Graduate Management Scheme Application – Olivia Hughes Dear Hiring Manager, I've recently graduated in Business Management and would like to apply for your Graduate Management Scheme. During my degree I completed internships at two different companies; I'm analytical and a natural team player. I've attached my CV. Thank you in advance for considering my application. Kind regards, Olivia Hughes
Common Mistakes
- Writing a long, page-after-page email (no one reads it)
- Forgetting to attach your CV (check BEFORE you send!)
- Getting the name wrong instead of using "Dear Hiring Manager"
- Spelling mistakes — they erode trust
- A file name like "new_cv_final_v2.pdf"
