You've sent dozens, maybe hundreds of applications. You've spent hours scanning listings and sending them off one by one — but your inbox holds not a single reply. It's demoralising, but it's also very common, and it's most likely nothing to do with your ability. The problem is usually this: your CV never reaches the person who would evaluate it.
The reality: most CVs are rejected before a human sees them
Most mid-size and large companies first scan incoming applications with software (an ATS — Applicant Tracking System). This software reads the CV and scores it against the posting's criteria; low-scoring ones never land on a recruiter's screen. So the most likely explanation for "I applied and heard nothing" is that your CV can't get past this first software filter.
The good news: this is a fixable problem. The three reasons below account for the vast majority of cases where you get no response.
Reason 1: Your CV gets stuck in the ATS scan
The tables, multi-column layouts, graphic icons and background images added to make a CV look smart — most ATS software can't read them. Your beautiful two-column design can look like a "blank page" to the software, and your information disappears.
- Use a plain, single-column flow instead of tables and text boxes.
- Use standard headings: Experience, Education, Skills (not creative ones).
- Put information in text, not graphics (graphical skill bars aren't read).
- Send a PDF — but make sure the design is text-based and selectable.

Reason 2: The posting's keywords aren't in your CV
The ATS compares your CV against the words in the job posting. If the posting says "customer relationship management" and your CV only says "customer satisfaction", the software may fail to match them. The higher the match, the higher your score.
This isn't about lying — it's about describing skills you genuinely have in the language of the posting. Open the listing you're applying to, note the recurring key terms, and use those terms naturally for work you've actually done.

Reason 3: You send the same generic CV to everyone

Other overlooked reasons
- Contact-detail errors: a wrong phone number or an unprofessional email like "party_animal_88@...". Even if they want to call, they can't reach you.
- A task list instead of results: instead of "I was responsible for", show what you achieved with a number ("increased sales by 20%"). Employers want to see whether you made a difference.
- An overly long CV: if your experience is limited, one page is enough. A three-page CV often goes unread from the start.
- Spelling mistakes: the easiest way to get rejected. Read your CV aloud, or have someone — or an AI — read it over.
