Sample answer outline: I start by reviewing the geotechnical report to assess soil classification, bearing capacity and settlement risk. I cross-check the report against the structural design and, where there is any doubt, revisit the foundation type with the design engineer and geotechnical specialist. I can share an example from [a project you worked on] where we revised the foundation design using this approach.

3. How do you ensure site safety?

How to approach: Give concrete detail on daily checks, training and inspection habits.

Sample answer outline: I start the day with a site walk and risk check, and make PPE inspections and toolbox talks a routine. Working with the health & safety officer, I run a permit-to-work system for high-risk activities such as working at height. When I see a breach, I use my authority to stop the work without hesitation; safety comes before the programme.

4. How do you respond when a project falls behind programme?

Why they ask: To see your crisis-management and planning skills.

How to approach: Give an example of analysing the cause of delay and optimising resources/programme.

Sample answer outline: First I analyse the root cause of the delay (supply, weather, labour). I reallocate resources to activities on the critical path and, where possible, revise the programme to run work packages in parallel. I share the revised programme and its cost implications transparently with the client.

5. Which software (AutoCAD, SAP2000, MS Project) do you use?

How to approach: State the software and what you use each package for.

6. How do you deal with defects and non-conformances in construction?

Why they ask: Measures quality management and decisiveness.

How to approach: Explain identification, documentation and corrective action step by step.

Sample answer outline: When I identify a defect I first stop the relevant work, then document it with photographs and a report. I raise a non-conformance record and plan the corrective action in line with the technical specification and drawings. To prevent a recurrence I give the team a short briefing and update the checklist.

7. What is your experience with valuations and quantity take-offs?

I have experience with both remeasurement and lump-sum contract types. When a difference of opinion arises with the client or subcontractor over a valuation, I reach agreement based on the measurement records and site instructions.

8. What checks do you carry out before a concrete pour?

Why they ask: Evaluates technical rigour and quality awareness on site.

How to approach: List concrete check steps such as reinforcement, formwork, cover and taking samples.

Sample answer outline: Before the pour I check reinforcement bar diameter, spacing and cover against the drawings, and inspect formwork cleanliness and stability. I confirm with the relevant trades that service penetrations and fixings are complete. During the pour I oversee slump testing and cube sampling, and prepare the curing plan in advance.

9. How would you handle an experienced tradesperson who insists on ignoring a safety rule?

Why they ask: Tests establishing authority and communication balance in a situational way.

How to approach: Explain how you persuade by making the risk concrete without belittling the person, but apply sanctions if needed.

Sample answer outline: First I speak to them one to one, without embarrassing them in front of the team, and set out the concrete consequences of the risk for them and the crew. I make clear that I respect their experience but that the rule is not open to negotiation. If it continues, I invoke the safety procedure and, if necessary, stop the work; I can illustrate this with [an example you have experienced].

10. How do you monitor and control subcontractor performance?

Why they ask: Measures site management and stakeholder control.

How to approach: List concrete mechanisms such as programme tracking, quality control and tying to valuations.

Sample answer outline: I hold weekly progress meetings with subcontractors against the works programme and check workmanship on daily site walks. I report missing or defective work in writing and do not include it in a valuation until it is put right. I also make good performance visible; mutual trust speeds the job up in the long run.

11. How do you keep up with building regulations and current legislation?

How to approach: List concrete sources such as Building Regs, ICE/CPD training and industry publications.

Sample answer outline: I follow the Building Regulations and relevant British Standards and codes regularly, and attend [ICE/professional body] CPD and industry seminars. When legislation changes I check the impact on my projects and share it with my team. I also keep up with current worked examples through [a source you follow].

12. Do you prefer site or office roles, and why?

Why they ask: To understand fit with the position and your motivation.

How to approach: State your honest preference in line with the job ad; show you are productive on either side.

Sample answer outline: I have worked on both sides in my career; I think I am more productive on the [side you prefer] because [your reason]. That said, I believe the two roles feed each other; a design engineer who does not know site, or a site engineer who does not know the design, is incomplete. I can adapt to the balance this role requires.

13. You learn that a critical material will not arrive shortly before the deadline; what do you do?

How to approach: Explain options such as alternative suppliers, equivalent-material approval and resequencing the work systematically.

Sample answer outline: First I clarify the situation and establish the length of the delay and the activities affected. In parallel I research alternative suppliers and start the approval process for an equivalent material that meets the specification. Meanwhile I resequence the work so the team is not left idle, and I inform the client of the delay risk early.

14. Can you tell us about a piece of work where you made a mistake and learned from it?

Why they ask: Assesses self-criticism, honesty and learning behaviourally.

How to approach: Use the STAR structure; own the mistake, and emphasise the lesson and the change you made afterwards.

Sample answer outline: On [a project] we had to redo a piece of work because of [your mistake, e.g. skipping a check step]. As soon as I noticed it I informed my manager and we set up the remediation plan together. After that experience I added [the measure you took, e.g. a pre-pour checklist] to my routine and the same mistake never happened again.

How to Answer — The STAR Method

Use the STAR structure to answer behavioural questions with a strong story:

  • Situation: What was the context?
  • Task: What was your responsibility?
  • Action: What did you do?
  • Result: What outcome/impact followed? (with numbers if possible)

What to Highlight in the Interview

  • Write every project with m², number of storeys, budget and delivery time — not "a large project" but "62,000 m², 38 storeys".
  • Make clear in your title whether you are stronger on site or in design/structural work; employers seek these two profiles differently.
  • Add a safety figure: "0 accidents" or "zero lost-time days" is a strong signal when taken seriously.
  • State the standards you worked to (Eurocodes, BS EN, Building Regulations) — command of current codes sets you apart.
  • Highlight schedule-management experience with Primavera/MS Project; it is decisive in site manager roles.

What to Avoid

  • Writing a job description with no results ("controlled concrete pours" but no waste/time gain).
  • Not stating how many square metres / how many storeys your projects were — the employer cannot see the project scale.
  • Never mentioning safety and accident performance.
  • Listing software generically like "MS Office" while omitting professional tools such as SAP2000 and Primavera.
