"What Are Your Weaknesses?" — Smart Ways to Answer

"My greatest weakness is my perfectionism." Every interviewer has heard this hundreds of times — and nobody believes it any more. "What are your weaknesses?" isn't a trick question; it's a test of self-awareness and the desire to grow. With the right formula it can be turned into a strong moment.

What Is the Interviewer Actually Looking For?

  • Self-awareness: Can you assess yourself realistically?
  • Honesty: A rehearsed tactic, or a sincere answer?
  • A reflex for growth: What do you do once you notice a weakness?

In other words, the question isn't about your past — it's about the relationship you have with your weaknesses.

The 3-Step Answer Formula

  1. Pick a genuine but manageable weakness — not one of the core skills of the role.
  2. Acknowledge its concrete impact — in a single sentence, "it sometimes led to this".
  3. Describe the measure you took and the progress you made — this part should be 60% of your answer.

6 Safe and Convincing Examples

  • Struggling to delegate: "I had a tendency to do the work myself; as the team grew, I became the bottleneck. Now I write out the task allocation in advance in the weekly plan."
  • Nerves about public speaking: "I used to avoid presentations; last year I deliberately practised by taking on four internal presentations, and now I can handle them."
  • Not being able to say no: "I took on too much and put the timeline at risk; now I prioritise new requests against my capacity and negotiate openly."
  • Getting lost in detail and missing the big picture: "Chasing perfection in a report, I sometimes drifted towards the deadline; I've made myself a rule: 'finish first, then polish'."
  • Hesitance to ask for feedback: "Instead of waiting for criticism, I now ask my manager for a 15-minute review after every project."
  • A new technical area: "My Excel is strong but my SQL was at a beginner level; I've been taking an online course for three months and can now write simple queries." (Only use this if it's a skill in the 'preferred' section of the advert!)

Never Say

  1. "I don't have any weaknesses." — a signal of zero self-awareness.
  2. "I'm a perfectionist / I work too hard." — a humble-brag cliché that backfires.
  3. A core part of the role: saying "I'm poor at communicating with people" in a sales role is grounds for rejection.
  4. Confessing a character flaw: "I'm impatient, I get angry quickly" — alarm bells in a professional context.
