1. How do you manage client expectations throughout the design process?

Sample answer outline: I break the process into stages from the outset and set a sign-off point at each one: concept, developed design, technical design. At every presentation I tell the client clearly "what we are fixing at this stage and what becomes harder to change afterwards"; most surprises come from a lack of that transparency. I have made a habit of getting sign-offs in writing and clarifying the scope of any revisions.

2. How do you balance quality against a tight budget?

Why they ask: Assesses practical judgement and creative problem-solving.

How to approach: Give an example of a material alternative or a partial change.

Sample answer outline: When the budget tightens I first protect the backbone of the design — the essential idea — and make savings on the items that don’t undermine it. A material-alternatives study is the most effective route: more economical materials that give a similar effect, details that are simpler to build. I present it to the client not as "I’ve cheapened it" but as "here’s how we keep the same effect within this budget", with options.

3. Tell us about a disagreement you resolved with a project manager/contractor on site.

Why they ask: To see your problem-solving and coordination.

How to approach: Give an example of a document-based, solution-focused approach.

Sample answer outline: On one project the build team wanted to run a detail in a way that departed from the design; without making it personal I kept the discussion on the documents: the approved drawings, the specification and the detail sheet. At the same time I listened to the real difficulty on site and drew an intermediate detail that did not compromise the technical requirement. In a disagreement my position is clear: what can flex is a comfort detail, not safety or the integrity of the design.

4. How is BIM/Revit integrated into your workflow?

Why they ask: Measures your digital-architecture competence.

How to approach: Describe concretely at which stages you use BIM.

Sample answer outline: I work on the model with [your software, e.g. Revit] from [stage, e.g. developed design through to technical design]; I produce schedules of quantities and drawings from the model. I used the BIM model actively for clash detection across disciplines, which is a practice that seriously reduces the cost of surprises on site. I adapt quickly to a studio’s existing BIM standard and, where needed, contribute to developing templates and family libraries.

5. Which inspection points do you consider critical during the building-control process?

Why they ask: Assesses your knowledge of construction and quality control.

How to approach: List critical checks such as structure, fire and insulation/weatherproofing.

Sample answer outline: My priority is always the safety-related items: the execution of the structural system, fire-escape and compartmentation details, and the correct layering of waterproofing and thermal insulation. A mistake in these cannot be put right afterwards, or only at great cost, so an on-site check before they are closed up is essential. Documenting the check with photographs and a record protects the project and all parties.

6. How did sustainability or energy efficiency feature in one of your projects?

Why they ask: To see your current design thinking.

How to approach: Give a concrete example (insulation, solar shading, rainwater).

Sample answer outline: On a [type of project] I set the orientation and facade decisions around solar control; with [measure, e.g. solar shading/an insulation package/natural ventilation] I aimed to reduce the running load. I see sustainability not as a certificate tick-box but as a design input that starts with orientation and passive design. In material selection I also weigh durability and local sourcing.

7. Can you tell us about the most significant project in your portfolio?

Why they ask: Measures your competence and design thinking.

How to approach: Tell it through the flow concept → execution → outcome.

Sample answer outline: The project I put forward from my portfolio is [type of project]; I built the concept on [the design idea] and tried to carry that idea consistently from the plan layout to the language of the facade. Along the way I dealt with a real constraint like [difficulty, e.g. a tight site/budget/regulations], and my solution gave the design character rather than weakening it. Being able to show the reasoning behind my decisions matters more, to me, than the final render.

8. How do you take a concept through to execution?

Why they ask: Assesses your command of the process.

How to approach: Describe the steps sketch → technical drawing → coordination.

Sample answer outline: After the concept sketch I test the idea against technical reality early: structural grids, the core, regulatory limits. In the technical design I concentrate the detailing on the points that carry the concept, and I run the coordination with the engineering disciplines drawing by drawing. I also value being present at the start of the site stage; a concept is completed not on paper but on site.

9. What is your experience of planning-permission and regulatory processes?

Why they ask: Measures your practical knowledge.

How to approach: Describe concretely the approval processes you have handled.

Sample answer outline: Over [X years] I have prepared applications to [local authority/body] and followed the approval processes; reading planning constraints and calculating plot ratios and set-backs are part of my daily practice. I have found that closing out authority comments and requests for changes quickly and completely is what speeds the process most. I treat the regulations not as a constraint but as an early input to the design.

10. How do you keep up with changes in building regulations and planning policy?

Why they ask: Measures currency with regulation, which is critical in practice, and a sense of professional responsibility.

How to approach: Concretely describe the sources you follow and how a change fed into your project.

Sample answer outline: I regularly follow official announcements, the relevant professional-body updates and regulatory changes; I add the critical changes to my own checklist. If an update affects a live project, I spot it early and inform the client and the team in good time. For a practising architect, keeping up with regulation is not a routine chore but professional responsibility itself.

11. How do you coordinate details that clash between the structural, mechanical and electrical drawings?

Why they ask: Measures your cross-discipline coordination skills; clashes are the main source of costly errors on site.

How to approach: Describe your clash-checking routine and the critical zones (ceiling voids, risers, below beams).

Sample answer outline: I don’t leave coordination to the site; during the technical-design stage I overlay the drawings and pay particular attention to the critical zones (within ceiling voids, risers, below beams). When I find a clash, rather than emailing the relevant engineer one by one, I prefer to get a firm decision in a joint coordination meeting. I also track that decisions are marked up on the revised drawings and reissued; coordination ends not when a decision is made but when the drawing is updated.

12. How do you set priorities on a project that won’t make the deadline?

Why they ask: Assesses planning and honest communication under pressure; managing delay is a reality of practice.

How to approach: Describe giving early warning, bringing critical deliverables forward and negotiating scope.

Sample answer outline: My first rule is not to hide the delay: the moment I see it, I go to the project manager with a realistic picture. Then I break the delivery into parts; the items that block the approval process and drawings tied to an external timetable, such as permissions or tender, are brought forward, while visual/presentation items go last. If necessary I renegotiate the scope with the client; an incomplete but correct delivery is better than one that looks complete but is wrong.

13. Can you tell us about the most difficult project of your career and what it taught you?

Why they ask: A behavioural (STAR) question; it looks for your capacity for self-criticism and learning from experience.

How to approach: Describe the difficulty honestly; don’t externalise the blame, and state the concrete lesson you took.

Sample answer outline: On a [type of project] I struggled seriously because of [difficulty, e.g. frequently changing client decisions/an aggressive timetable]; at one point the revisions began to threaten the integrity of the design. What pulled the process together was tying decisions to written sign-off and clarifying the scope of revisions. That project taught me that architecture is not just drawing well but designing the process and the communication; ever since, I start every project with that discipline.

14. Why do you want to work at our studio; what do you think of our work?

Why they ask: Measures motivation and whether there is genuine alignment with the studio’s design line; it filters out candidates who apply without looking at the portfolio.

How to approach: Make a concrete reference to at least one of the studio’s projects; offer an observation, not general praise.

Sample answer outline: Before applying I studied your portfolio; in particular [a project/approach, e.g. your handling of a certain building type] chimes with my own design thinking. Working on projects that vary in scale and type will let me develop my [strong area] experience while learning new ground. In the long term I aim to grow towards running projects with responsibility, and I think you are the right studio for that.
