1. Which analytical instruments and techniques have you worked with?
Why they ask: Instrument experience is the first and hardest filter for chemist roles.
How to approach: State the instruments with their purpose and your level; honestly distinguish "I have seen it" from "I worked with it routinely".
Sample answer outline: I have worked routinely with [an instrument/technique group] on [purpose of use] analyses. I have experience across the whole process, from sample preparation to reporting results. I have shown with [an example] that I can quickly learn an unfamiliar instrument from the method and manual.
2. What do you do when you encounter an out-of-specification (OOS) analytical result?
Why they ask: The critical question that tests awareness of quality systems and the integrity not to manipulate a result.
How to approach: Do not just re-run and pass it; describe recording it and following the investigation procedure.
Sample answer outline: I never quietly close out an OOS result by re-analysing; I first record it and start the relevant procedure. I investigate the possibility of an analytical error systematically by tracing the sample, reagent, instrument and application steps. I do not invalidate the result until a root cause is found; I work transparently with quality assurance.
3. How do you handle chemical safety and waste management in the lab?
Why they ask: It measures the safety culture in working with hazardous materials.
How to approach: Concretely describe the habit of reading the safety data sheet (MSDS/SDS), separating incompatible chemicals and segregating waste.
Sample answer outline: Before working with a new chemical I always read the safety data sheet and separate incompatible substances in storage. I choose personal protective equipment appropriate to the task and follow fume-hood discipline. I segregate waste by class and hand it over in line with the disposal procedure.
4. How do you validate or verify an analytical method?
Why they ask: Method validation knowledge is a distinguishing competence in quality-control laboratories.
How to approach: Show conceptual command of parameters such as accuracy, precision and repeatability; do not just recite a list.
Sample answer outline: I assess the method’s fitness for purpose through parameters such as accuracy, precision and repeatability. Through [experience] I took part in method-validation work. I know that a result produced with an unvalidated method cannot be used for a decision, and I take that discipline seriously.
5. Do you have experience working under quality standards (GMP, ISO, etc.)?
Why they ask: It measures your fit with documentation and procedural discipline in a regulated environment.
How to approach: If you have it, describe concretely which system you worked under; if not, make up for it with your documentation rigour.
Sample answer outline: I have worked under [a standard/system] and internalised the principle that "if it is not written down, it did not happen". I take care that records are contemporaneous, legible and correction-traceable. When a deviation from procedure is needed, I do it not on my own but through the change-management process.
6. On a day full of routine analyses, how do you sequence the work?
Why they ask: It assesses efficiency and sample-management organisation.
How to approach: Describe a prioritisation logic based on urgency, sample stability and instrument run times.
Sample answer outline: I sequence by three criteria: the urgency of the result, the stability of the sample and instrument run times. I start long analyses early and carry out other work during the wait times. Even under pressure I do not skip the recording and control steps; speed does not justify an error.
7. Can you tell us about a mistake you made in the lab and how you managed it?
Why they ask: It tests honesty and error culture (STAR); the candidate who claims to be error-free does not inspire trust.
How to approach: Tell a small but real mistake; emphasise early reporting and a lasting corrective measure.
Sample answer outline: During [a situation] I realised [the mistake I made]. Before the results were reported I told my supervisor straight away and we re-ran the affected analyses. Then, to prevent a recurrence, I proposed [the measure taken]; the cost of speaking up early about a mistake is always lower than hiding it.
8. How do you keep up with developments and new methods in chemistry?
Why they ask: It measures professional curiosity and openness to development.
How to approach: Name a concrete source and habit; be ready to mention a current method that interests you. RSC membership and journals are one route.
Sample answer outline: I follow developments in my field regularly through [a source], including Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) publications. I keep a close eye on innovations in [an area of interest] in particular. For me the real point of keeping up is thinking about how to adapt what I learn into the current workflow.
9. Why do you want to work in this sector and in this role?
Why they ask: To see awareness of your sector choice and your intention to stay.
How to approach: Connect to the specific side of the sector (pharma, food, environmental, cosmetics, etc.); avoid generic sentences.
Sample answer outline: I chose the [sector] area because of [a sector-specific reason]; that the analysis I do has a real-world counterpart in [an impact area] feels meaningful to me. The [scope of duties] in this role maps directly onto my specialism. I want to develop long-term here and contribute to the laboratory’s quality culture.

Use the STAR structure to answer behavioural questions with a strong story:
- Situation: What was the context?
- Task: What was your responsibility?
- Action: What did you do?
- Result: What outcome/impact followed? (with numbers if possible)
What to Highlight in the Interview
- ✓Clearly list the analytical instruments you use (HPLC, GC-MS, FTIR) and the methods you apply.
- ✓State the sector you work in (pharmaceutical, food, cosmetics, petrochemical) in your title or summary.
- ✓Emphasise your experience with quality standards such as ISO 17025, GMP and ISO 9001.
- ✓Add numbers such as daily analysis volume, number of validations and improvement rates.
- ✓Show chemical safety, MSDS and health-and-safety training in the certifications section.
What to Avoid
- ✕Writing only "I did analysis" without naming the instrument and method.
- ✕Hiding the sector and not saying which product group you worked with.
- ✕Skipping quality standards (ISO 17025, GMP) experience.
- ✕Not including chemical safety and MSDS knowledge on the CV.
- ✕Mixing R&D and quality control experience together without giving focus.
